With temperatures dropping steadily, the impact of winter on the body becomes more noticeable—especially for pregnant women. Cold weather can weaken immunity, increase fatigue, and raise the risk of infections. During pregnancy, the body requires additional warmth, nutrition, and energy to support both the mother and the developing baby. Low temperatures can also affect blood circulation, causing numbness in the hands and feet, joint discomfort, and exhaustion. If proper care is not taken, common winter ailments like colds, coughs, viral infections, and flu may further complicate pregnancy.
To ensure a healthy and safe winter season, experts advise pregnant women to avoid certain habits. Here are the key mistakes that should be completely avoided.
1. Drinking Insufficient Water
According to Dr. Saloni Chadha, Department of Gynecology, RML Hospital, one of the most common mistakes during winter is reduced water intake. Even though thirst decreases in cold weather, the body’s hydration needs remain unchanged. Dehydration can lead to headaches, dizziness, constipation, and decreased amniotic fluid levels.
2. Sitting in Cold Places or Wearing Inadequate Warm Clothing
Staying too long in a cold environment or not layering enough warm clothes can increase the risk of catching colds, infections, and seasonal flu. Exposure to cold temperatures may also worsen stiffness, fatigue, and joint pain.
3. Overeating Heavy or Fried Foods
Winter often triggers cravings for rich, fried, and oily foods. However, consuming too many heavy items can cause indigestion, acidity, and bloating. Such foods also reduce energy levels, making pregnant women feel more sluggish.
4. Not Getting Enough Sunlight
Limited sunlight exposure during winter can lead to vitamin D deficiency, which affects bone strength, immunity, and mood. Vitamin D is essential for the healthy development of the baby’s bones, making sun exposure even more important.
5. Avoiding Light Exercise or Sitting for Long Hours
Skipping physical activity in winter may increase muscle stiffness and slow blood circulation. Sitting for long periods can also contribute to swelling, back pain, and fatigue. Simple exercises like walking or prenatal stretching (as advised by a doctor) help maintain flexibility and energy levels.
