If you also use UPI or online banking, then it is very important to know about this new scam. National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has warned users about this danger on its X (Twitter) account.

How does Call Merge Scam work?

First of all, you get a call from an unknown number. The caller claims that he has got your number from someone he knows. Then he says that he is already talking to someone you know and asks you to merge the calls. As soon as you merge the calls, your call gets connected to the bank's OTP verification call. After this, the OTPs that come on your phone start reaching the fraudster and he steals money from your bank account.

NPCI gave warning

In a social media post, the National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued a warning about such scams and has suggested some ways to avoid it. NPCI has advised against merging any unknown calls and has advised to complain about such fraudulent calls on NPCI helpline number 1930.

How to avoid this scam?

  • Do not merge calls from unknown callers – If someone asks you to merge calls, verify the caller first.
  • Do not share OTP with anyone – No bank or financial institution asks for OTP, so be cautious if someone does so.
  • If you receive OTP without any reason, report it immediately – If you receive OTP without any transaction, immediately complain to the bank customer care or 1930 helpline number.
  • Keep UPI and banking security features on – Activate 2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) and do not ignore any bank
