Google Chrome is the most used internet browser in the world. By February 2024, 65% of people used Chrome to browse the internet on a desktop. This figure is more than 63.87% in 2023 and 35.82% in 2013. This is why the recent warning from the Indian government has become even more serious. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high alert for those using the Google Chrome desktop app.

CERT-In has found several vulnerabilities in the browser's desktop app. They say that if these vulnerabilities are exploited, a hacker can access your computer remotely and run the desired program.

Flaw found on Google Chrome

India's government cyber security agency has reported that there is a flaw in Google Chrome's desktop app. This flaw affects those Chrome versions that are older than 125.0.6422.141/.142. This flaw affects all operating systems including Windows, Mac, and Linux. By taking advantage of this flaw, a hacker can remotely control your computer and steal your files. Therefore, you must update Google Chrome as soon as possible.

Government warning

According to the warning issued by CERT-In, some vulnerabilities have been found in the Google Chrome desktop app, which can be exploited by an attacker to deceive the users and take control of their computer. These vulnerabilities are in many things like Media Session, Dawn and Presentation API, Keyboard, Stream API, and WebRTC.

Pay attention to the links

The cyber security agency of the Government of India has warned that there are some vulnerabilities in the Google Chrome desktop app. These vulnerabilities are in many parts of Chrome such as media, presentation API, keyboard, stream, and WebRTC. By taking advantage of these vulnerabilities, hackers can create a specific type of webpage and trick you into opening it. This means that Chrome users should be especially careful about the links they see on their browser, whether it is a pop-up or a link received in an email or SMS from an unknown source.
