What Is Telesurgery: Modern medical science is constantly progressing. One of these advancements is telesurgery. With the help of this, on Saturday, a team of doctors sitting 40 km away in Gurgaon successfully operated on a prostate cancer patient at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center in Delhi.

This operation was done by Dr. Sudhir Rawal, Medical Director and Head of the Genito-Uro Oncology Department of Cancer Institute, and his team. Giving information about the patient, he said that after the 45-minute surgery, the patient's condition was stable. He will soon be discharged from the hospital. In such a situation, telesurgery seems like magic. Let us know in detail in this article what is telesurgery and how it works-

What is telesurgery?

Telesurgery can also be called "remote surgery" in Hindi. It is a type of minimally invasive surgery. In this, the doctor is able to perform the operation while being at another place away from the patient.

What is telesurgery like?

For telesurgery, doctors use robotic equipment. These equipment are connected to a computer and high-speed internet, allowing the doctor to see and control the operation site.

Telesurgery process

  1. First of all, general preparation of the patient is done at the operation site itself.
  2. The doctor is then in a remote control room located at a different location, away from the operation theatre. This room has high-definition cameras and control panels.
  3. The camera sends images of the operation site to the doctor's control panel. The doctor operates the robotic instruments by viewing these images and using the control panel. The robotic instruments are actually inserted inside the patient's body through small incisions and perform the operation.
  4. After the operation is completed, the patient is looked after in the same hospital where the operation took place.

Advantages of telesurgery

  • With the help of telesurgery, patients living in areas where experienced surgeons are not available can also be treated.
  • Telesurgery uses robotic instruments to make small incisions on the patient's body. This causes less pain to the patient and helps in quick recovery.
  • With the help of robotic equipment, doctors can perform operations with greater precision.
  • In telesurgery, the doctor is not present in the operation theatre, hence the risk of infection is reduced.

Telesurgery will be a boon for patients

Telesurgery is still in the developing stage, but it is expected to develop further in the future. In the coming times, with the help of telesurgery, even complex operations will be able to be done from remote places. Apart from this, due to the reduction in the cost of telesurgery, it will also become more accessible to the common people. Most importantly, due to this technology, no patient will have to lose his life due to a delay in treatment.
