A person preparing for UPSC fell prey to an online dating scam and lost Rs 1.2 lakh. The IAS aspirant met a girl named Varsha on the online dating app Tinder who trapped him in her net. On the pretext of celebrating his birthday, the girl invited him to a cafe named Black Mirror in East Delhi. Here he was cheated of Rs 1.2 lakh by giving him a bill for expensive food. On the complaint of the victim, Delhi Police arrested the cafe owner and the girl.

How do people get duped in online dating?

Usually, people are made victims of dating apps by creating fake profiles. Such scams are done by trapping people on online dating apps like OkCupid, Bumble, and Tinder. Chatting begins after exchanging numbers. After chatting, a meeting is planned. Something similar happened in this case as well. A girl named Varsha called the boy to his cafe on the pretext of celebrating her birthday.

The victim told the police that he had ordered only snacks, two cakes, and four non-alcoholic shots. The twist in this case came when the girl left the cafe making an excuse for an emergency. After this, when the bill came, the boy was shocked to hear the amount. The cafe handed over a bill of 1 lakh 21 thousand. The boy was shocked to see this bill. 

When we protested, the cafe owners threatened us.

The victim told the police that when she saw such an expensive bill, she protested against it, but the cafe staff threatened her and also threatened to kill her. Due to fear, the victim had to transfer the entire amount to a cafe owner named Akshay Pahwa.

Police investigation revealed

During police interrogation, cafe owner Akshay Pahwa said that the cafe runs in partnership with his cousins ​​Vansh Pahwa and Ansh Grover. He told that some of the cafe staff and managers were also involved in this fraud. He also told that Varsha is Afsana Parveen. She also used to tell her name as Ayesha and Noor. 25-year-old Parveen was looking for a job. She used to trap the person on the app and take him to the cafe. There the cafe staff used to extort money by giving a hefty bill in collusion.
