Jumped Deposit Scam: Cyber frauds have come up with a new type of scam to dupe UPI users, in which people's accounts are being cleared by depositing money in someone else's account.

Jumped Deposit Scam: The cyber crime wing of Tamil Nadu police has issued a warning about a new type of fraud called "Jumped Deposit". This scam targets UPI (Unified Payments Interface) users and takes advantage of their curiosity and trust to steal money from their accounts.

How does this scam happen?

Small deposit:

The fraudsters first deposit a small amount like ₹5,000 in the victim's account.

SMS Alerts:

The victim then receives an SMS from the bank, prompting them to check their balance.

Use of the app:

When victims open the banking app and enter their PIN, they unknowingly allow money withdrawals.

Theft of a large sum of money:

In this process, fraudsters withdraw huge sums of money from the victim's account.

How to avoid this scam?

The Tamil Nadu Police has advised the following precautions:

  • Wait and check: If your account suddenly receives a deposit, avoid checking the balance immediately. Wait for 15-30 minutes to let any fraudulent requests get automatically cancelled.
  • Enter the wrong PIN: If you're prompted to enter a PIN, enter the wrong PIN a couple of times to rule out any potential fraud.
  • Report suspicious deposits: If any money is deposited into your account without your knowledge, immediately report it to the bank and confirm.
  • Keep personal information safe: Do not share your PIN, OTP or other sensitive information with anyone, even if the person claims to be a bank representative.
