India World Test Championship Scenarios: The upcoming Test season is going to be very important for India. This series of home and away matches will start against Bangladesh and end with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. After this, the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) will be played at Lord's Cricket Ground in London from June 11, where the top two teams of the WTC points table will clash for the title.
India currently tops the World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle with a win percentage of 68.52%. Australia is second with 62.5%, while New Zealand is third with a win percentage of 50%. India will have to perform well in the upcoming 10 Test matches to secure their place in the WTC final.
What does mathematics say for India?
According to a report published on the Royal Challengers Bangalore website, India will have to win at least 7 of the next 10 Test matches to maintain its winning percentage above 60%. The two-match series against Bangladesh and the three-Test home series against New Zealand will be very important. Victory in these five matches will strengthen India's position.
After this, India has to tour Australia, where five Test matches will be played under the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. After winning the last two Test series in Australia, India is full of confidence and is expected to win at least two matches here too. If India wins all the 5 matches of the home series and 2 matches in Australia, then it can maintain its current position.
However, India needs at least 5 wins and 1 draw to make it to the top two. If India registers 6 wins, its win percentage will go up to 64.03%, making it almost certain that the team will make it to the final.
Australia and New Zealand's position
Australia, on the other hand, have 7 Tests left to play. They need 47 points to secure a place in the WTC final, which can be achieved by four wins or three wins and a draw. New Zealand, on the other hand, have 8 matches left, 5 of which will be played in Asia. They will need 6 wins or 5 wins and 1 draw to achieve a 60% win percentage.
