CAS will give its decision on Vinesh Phogat
Today, Tuesday 13 August is going to be a very important and historic day in the history of world wrestling. Today in Paris, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) will give its verdict on the appeal of India's legendary wrestler Vinesh Phogat, which will decide whether Vinesh will get the silver medal of Paris Olympics 2024 or not. Vinesh was disqualified before the final due to being overweight and she missed the medal. Vinesh had appealed against this and now the decision is to come on it. Today's decision will also decide whether the current rules of United World Wrestling (UWW) regarding weight measurement will remain or there will be a change in them. If the decision comes in favor of Vinesh, then it can be revolutionary for wrestling, forcing UWW to change the rules.

- After the hearing in CAS, the decision will come by 9.30 pm tonight.
What is the matter?
For the past one week, this issue has been dominating the national and international media and social media. It started on 6 August at the Paris Olympics. That day, Vinesh Phogat created a stir by defeating Japan's world number-1 Yui Susaki in the first round in the women's 50 kg category. After this, Vinesh won her quarterfinal match easily and in the evening, she made it to the final by defeating Cuba's Guzman Lopez in the semifinal. She became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final of the Olympics. With this, her medal was also confirmed, which could have been gold and at least a silver medal was certain.
Then the final was to be held the next day i.e. on 7th August but before the final, as per the rules, the weight had to be measured again in the morning. Here Vinesh's weight was found to be 100 grams more than the prescribed 50 kg and as per the rules of UWW, she was disqualified and taken out of the final. The rules of UWW are so strict that not only the final, but she was taken out of the entire event and all her results were canceled and the possible silver medal was also taken away. She was placed last among the 12 wrestlers.
Vinesh's appeal and hearing
Against this rule and this result, Vinesh filed an appeal in CAS on the evening of 7 August. Vinesh demanded that the final be stopped and she be given her place back, which was rejected by CAS saying that they cannot stop the final. After this, Vinesh amended the appeal and demanded a joint silver medal. Her argument is that her weight was more only on the day of the final, but on the first day she played all three matches within the prescribed weight limit. CAS heard it for 3 hours on 9 August, in which the Indian Olympic Association also became a party, while the International Olympic Committee and UWW also presented their sides. Earlier the decision on this was to come on 10 August but it was postponed to 13 August.
