There was a huge loss in the T20 World Cup, now who demanded 830 crores from ICC?
The T20 World Cup 2024 proved to be great for the Indian team. Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, Team India defeated South Africa in the final and won the title. By winning the memorable final played in Barbados on June 29, the Indian team also ended the title drought of 11 years. This World Cup held in America and West Indies became memorable for Indian fans but not everyone benefited from it and now a similar appeal has reached the International Cricket Council, in which a loss of 100 million dollars i.e. Rs 830 crore has been talked about.
Many matches of this World Cup, played in June, were played in America, while some matches of the group stage, Super-8, semi-finals, and finals were played in the Caribbean. This was the first World Cup organized in America and in that too, international cricket was played in New York for the first time. For this, a temporary stadium was built in Naso County. Now everyone knows what happened to the matches played on that ground. Also, some other matches did not prove to be as strong as expected, due to which now the tournament's broadcaster Disney-Star has demanded a discount of Rs 830 crore from the ICC.
Cricbuzz has claimed in a report that Disney-Star had written two separate letters to the ICC some time back and has sought a discount of $100 million in the broadcasting deal for the loss caused by the T20 World Cup matches. Last year itself, the ICC sold the broadcasting rights, which Disney-Star bought for $3 billion i.e. about Rs 25 thousand crores. This deal has started with the T20 World Cup itself. In its argument, Disney-Star cited many matches including India-Pakistan, which did not prove to be as strong as expected. This appeal of Star was also discussed in the ICC board meeting held in Colombo last month.
In this letter, the most importance has been given to the India-Canada match, which was to be played in Lauderhill on June 15 but was canceled without starting due to rain, due to which the broadcaster has suffered a lot. Apart from this, the match played between India and Pakistan in New York also did not live up to expectations and was low-scoring. Not only this, the first semi-final match played between Afghanistan and South Africa in Trinidad was also a loss for Star because this match was over in just 20-21 overs. Apart from this, Star has demanded a discount while raising questions about the timing of many matches and the marketing of the tournament.
