The statement of the Court of Arbitration of Sports, which gave its verdict in the Vinesh Phogat case, has now come out. Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was declared ineligible and excluded from the Paris Olympics, after which the matter reached CAS i.e. Court of Arbitration of Sports and an appeal was made to give her a silver medal. But, after about a week, CAS rejected the challenge given by Vinesh to the decision. Now the court has expressed its reaction on the whole matter.
Vinesh Phogat participated in the women's 50 kg wrestling event at the Paris Olympics, where she performed brilliantly and reached the finals. Vinesh Phogat had become the first Indian to secure a place in the final of the Olympic wrestling event. But, while the celebrations were still on, the news of her weight increasing by 100 grams before the final match broke the heart of the whole of India. In fact, she was disqualified due to the same increased weight.
It is the player's responsibility to maintain their weight
The Court of Arbitration of Sports, which gave its verdict in the Vinesh Phogat case, has now issued its statement on it. According to it, the responsibility of keeping the weight under control lies entirely with the player. They have to ensure that they remain within the weight category in which they are participating. No exemption or exception can be given in such cases.
'It was tough to miss the weight on the second day of the event'
CAS said that it is very harsh for a player to miss weight on the second day of the event. That too when he did not use any wrong or illegal method. In its statement, it said that the player had participated in 50 kg wrestling on her own will. This means that she knew very well that she had to remain within that weight category for the competition. CAS further said that it is clear in Article 7 of the rules that every player who plays in any weight category participates in it of his own free will. In such a situation, he himself is responsible for staying in that weight category.
CAS admitted that wrestlers understand the rules related to weight
According to the rules of UWW, a weight relaxation of 2 kg may be given in some events like ranking series. But, there is no such relaxation on a platform like Olympics. CAS said that Vinesh is an experienced wrestler, who wrestled within the rules. There is no evidence that she does not understand the important things related to weight. She participated in the 50 kg weight category of her own will. In such a situation, maintaining that weight category is also a rule.
