Former South African cricket captain AB de Villiers has made a surprising statement about one of the most expensive players in IPL history.

When AB was asked during a Q&A session on his YouTube channel about the player whom he feels is overpaid in the Indian Premier League, he named the star all-rounder of England and the Punjab Kings (PBKS) batsman. Mentioned expensive player Sam Curran.

The former South African captain said, “I don't like to be controversial. But, in my opinion, more money has been spent on it over the years.”

De Villiers further said- However, he also feels that Curran is not a bad player. They have had a great World Cup, but that was many years ago. I don't think he has had a very good IPL recently. Apart from this, he has not performed very well for England.

Despite claiming the young English player is overpaid, De Villiers also highlights his ability to produce some spectacular performances like most world-class players.

He further said- “I have nothing against Sam Curran. I still think he's an amazing player. I just think he's been overpaid the last few years. Perhaps it would have been a good move to have given place to different players instead.

Before Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, Sam Curran had created history by becoming the most expensive buy by PBKS for Rs 18.5 crore in the IPL auction 2023.

Curran's record was first broken by Cummins, who was recently bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs 20.5 crore in the IPL 2024 auction, and he also became the first player to cross the Rs 20 crore mark.

Starc is the most expensive player in the history of IPL auction, having been bought by Shahrukh Khan-owned Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for Rs 24.75 crore.
