In the very first match of Team India in the Champions Trophy 2025, Indian captain Rohit Sharma made a mistake that broke the hearts of Indian cricket fans including Team India's all-rounder Akshar Patel. In Team India's first match against Bangladesh in Dubai, spinner Akshar Patel was close to completing his hat-trick but captain Rohit dropped a very easy catch and stopped Akshar Patel from making history.
Team India played its first match against Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy on Thursday, 20 February at the Dubai International Stadium. Mohammad Shami and Harshit Rana gave a great start to Team India, who was bowling first, by taking 3 wickets in the beginning. After this, Akshar Patel wreaked havoc and put Bangladesh in trouble in his first over itself.

After 8 consecutive overs of fast bowling, captain Rohit Sharma put Akshar Patel to bowl in the 9th over. Akshar also took the wicket of Tanjid Hasan on the second ball. Wicketkeeper KL Rahul took his catch. Then on the very next ball, new batsman Mushfiqur Rahim also got caught by Rahul. After taking 2 wickets in 2 consecutive balls, Akshar had a chance for a hattrick.

It was here that captain Rohit Sharma made such a mistake which is not even considered forgivable in cricket and then Rohit made this mistake on the hat-trick ball. Captain Rohit himself reached the first slip for the hat-trick ball, while Shubman Gill was at the second slip. New batsman Zakir Ali's bat edged Akshar's ball and Rohit stationed at the first slip got a very easy catch but the Indian captain probably looked in a hurry and could not take this catch. As a result, Akshar Patel missed the hat-trick.

No Indian player could believe Rohit's mistake. The spectators sitting in the stadium were also shocked and could not believe their eyes. Captain Rohit himself was very angry and started hitting the ground hard and then started apologizing to Akshar with folded hands. Akshar somehow hid his disappointment behind a smile.
