He has scored a double century in only his seventh innings. With this, he has made the record of playing the biggest innings for New Zealand for his first Test century. Earlier this record was held in the name of Matthew Sinclair (214).

He has become only the second New Zealand batsman to score a double century against South Africa. Before him, former captain Stephen Fleming had achieved this feat in the year 2006. He played a double century inning of 262 runs in the Cape Town Test.
