Shami received this honour from President Draupadi Murmu. Shami is the 46th male cricketer to receive this award. If we look at the 12 women cricketers who have received this honour, she becomes the 58th cricketer of the country.

Shami becomes the country's 'Arjuna'

The Arjuna Award is the country's second-highest sporting honour, which is awarded to athletes on the basis of their exceptional performance in recent years. Shami has been selected for this honour because of his excellent performance on the cricket field. His stellar performance was evident in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker. This time a total of 26 athletes were awarded the Arjuna Award, of which Shami was the only cricketer.

The duo had a memorable year in 2023, winning a gold medal at the Asian Games and a title at the Asian Championship. Additionally, they won together in major events such as the Indonesia Super 1000, Korea Super 500 and Swiss Super 300.
