On the first day of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh (September 19), R Ashwin has created a flurry of records by scoring a century. Ashwin completed his century in 108 balls with the help of 10 fours and 2 sixes in difficult conditions. This is the fastest century of his Test career. Before this, his fastest century in Tests came in 117 balls, which he scored against West Indies in 2011. Not only this, he has become the only player in the world to take more than 500 wickets and score 20 fifty plus scores in Test cricket.
Ashwin came to bat when Team India had lost 6 wickets at a score of 144. From here, he shared an unbeaten partnership of 195 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (86*), which helped India score 339 runs for the loss of 6 wickets by the end of the first day's play. Ashwin is playing after scoring 102 runs. During this powerful century, he also completed 1000 runs in the World Test Championship (WTC) as soon as he scored the 52nd run. He has become the second cricketer in the world to score more than a thousand runs and take 100 wickets in WTC. Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja had done this feat.
So far in the history of WTC, 11 bowlers have taken more than 100 wickets, but except Jadeja and Ashwin, no one has touched the 1000-run mark. Ashwin has 175 wickets in WTC. If he takes 13 wickets during the two-match Test series against Bangladesh, he will become the highest wicket-taker in the World Test Championship, surpassing Australia's Nathan Lyon (187).
