Before the first mega auction of IPL 2025, all the franchise owners involved in the league have sent their suggestions to the IPL officials during the feedback session. The most debated was about the retention policy and the right to match option. According to ESPN Cricinfo, the franchise owners have demanded that they should be allowed to retain 4 to 6 players. Apart from this, every franchise should have the opportunity of 8 right to match options. Not only this, they have also demanded to increase the period of the mega auction. The franchise has demanded from the IPL officials to conduct a mega auction after every 5 years. IPL officials and franchise owners can discuss all these demands in the meeting next week.
Why is there demand for mega auction after 5 years?
A senior official of an IPL franchise has explained the benefits of holding a mega auction every 5 years instead of every 3 years. He believes that the teams that have been associated since 2008 have invested a lot in the talent of young players at a small level, so that they can be made international level players. Many academies have been opened for this. Having a long gap will allow the team to continue this investment on uncapped young players. Due to the current rule, they fear losing their players.
Players do not want to give release option
He also said that during the 5-year mega auction, teams will have the opportunity to directly negotiate salaries with the players. If this happens, the relationship between the franchise and the player will remain better and they will also be able to keep their core players together. The official revealed that during this time, a demand has been made to the IPL officials to give the control of all the processes to the franchise without giving the option of release to the players. In this situation, the players will not be able to change their team for five years.
Although there is a rule of a 3-year cycle for the mega auction in IPL, but in the last 10 years, two mega auctions have been held at an interval of 4 years. After 2014, the mega auction was held for the first time in 2018, when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals made a comeback after a 2-year suspension. At the same time, due to Covid, the mega auction to be held in 2021 was also delayed by a year.
Demand for right to match option
A CEO of an IPL franchise has suggested a retention and a right to match option for the rest of the players. He gave the reason behind this that the team will have the opportunity to retain its biggest player as well as keep the rest of the players back in the team. Also, the price of the players will be decided according to the market, so that there will be no dissatisfaction in their mind. Let us tell you that this rule was used for the first time in 2018, under which 5 players were allowed to be retained. In this, the franchise could use the right to match option before the auction and during the auction to buy back its player at the final price of the auction.
