He has taken maximum 24 wickets in this World Cup. During this, he became the first bowler to take the fastest 50 wickets in World Cup history. Indian fast bowler Shami took the maximum of 24 wickets in 7 matches this season at a strong average of 10.7. This is the record for the third highest number of wickets in a single World Cup season. 

He has taken 7 big wickets for 57 runs against New Zealand in the semi-finals. On the basis of this performance, Shami has become the Indian bowler taking the most wickets in a match of One Day International cricket. He has broken Stuart Binny's record in this matter. He took six wickets for four runs against Bangladesh in Mirpur in 2014.
