Big news has come in the midst of Champions Trophy 2025. After the poor performance in the tournament, the first captain has been sacrificed. Former world champion England captain Jos Buttler has resigned. Buttler has taken this decision after the poor performance of the England team in the Champions Trophy. England had to face defeat in their first two matches in the Champions Trophy, the second of which came against a small team like Afghanistan. With this defeat, the team was out of the tournament. Now before their last group match in the Champions Trophy, Buttler has announced to leave the captaincy.

Captaincy could not be saved in the Champions Trophy.

Just before the end of the group stage of the Champions Trophy, on Friday 28 February, England captain Butler announced his decision in a press conference. Butler's decision has come just a day before the team's last match. The England team, which was already out of the tournament, will face South Africa in its last match. However, Butler will lead England for the last time in this match. Butler took charge of the England cricket team in 2022. Butler, however, made it clear that he will be available for selection in both formats, provided coach McCullum wants to select him.

Butler said in the press conference that this decision is good for the team and for his own good and the new captain will take the team forward in the coming times along with coach Brendon McCullum. Butler also admitted that the future of his captaincy depended on the result of this tournament and he was hoping to change his situation along with coach McCullum but this could not happen and after getting out in the first round of the Champions Trophy, he decided to leave the captaincy.

He became a world champion, then his car derailed

Jos Buttler took over the full-time captaincy of England in 2022. He took the team forward after the retirement of veteran captain Eoin Morgan and won the title in the first major tournament under his captaincy. It was under his captaincy that England created history by winning the T20 World Cup 2022. But since then, England's performance has been deteriorating continuously.

In the World Cup 2023, the team was badly eliminated in the first round itself, while in the T20 World Cup 2024, it played the semi-finals but lost to Team India. Butler has left the captaincy of the team in both formats. That is, apart from ODIs, he will not be the captain of the team in T20 as well. Under his captaincy, England played 95 matches in both these formats, out of which the team won only 44, while it lost 47. At the same time, 4 matches were inconclusive.
