You can get compensation in case of an explosion in a gas cylinder!

No matter how secure we are in our lives, the risk of unfortunate events is always there. There are many cases of unfortunate incidents, where we lose our property, health, and sometimes the life of ourselves or our family members. Just as many people are not aware of the free accident insurance on debit/credit cards offered by banks, India also has insurance against death, loss/damage to property, or health damage due to gas cylinder explosions. In general, people are not aware of this insurance or how to claim compensation for the LPG gas cylinder explosion. There can be many reasons behind this but due to lack of knowledge and awareness people do not claim for it, and the government is not able to spread this knowledge to the masses.

Public Liability Policy for Oil Industries

This LPG gas insurance policy is similar to the group insurance cover that is availed by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and even dealers across India. OMCs like Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) offer comprehensive insurance policies under the 'Public Liability Policy for the Oil Industry' to provide immediate relief to the victims. This applies to all LPG customers who have registered with OMCs.

Who is covered?

OMC's Public Liability Insurance Policy covers damages arising out of incidents in which LPG is the primary cause of the fire, but not in situations where the primary cause of the fire is another source that leads to consumption and explosion of LPG cylinders. The policy now allows for the following:

(i) Personal accident insurance coverage of Rs.6,00,000/- per person in case of death.

(ii) up to Rs.30 lakh in medical expenses per person, up to Rs. With a limit of 2,000,000/-.

(iii) In case of property damage, it covers a maximum of Rs. 2,00,000/- per incident at authorized locations at the registered address of the customer.

The customers are given a security and insurance brochure in both Hindi and English as well as regional languages with a visual illustration by the OMCs. Public Liability Insurance policy information is also available in the public domain on the websites of the OMCs. OMCs also organize regular Suraksha Clinics and LPG Panchayats to enhance customers' knowledge about safe LPG usage, protection techniques, and insurance information.

How to make a claim?

The distributor then informs the concerned oil/gas company and the insurance company.
