World Cancer Day 2025: Why are cancer cases increasing rapidly among youth and what are the ways to prevent it..

World Cancer Day 2025: As of February 2024, more than 14 lakh cancer cases have been reported in India and this number is estimated to reach 15 lakh by 2025. The worrying thing is that about half of these cases are being seen in youth (Cancer In Young Adults).
This situation is not only a serious threat to health but is also putting a lot of pressure on society and the economy. Let us know from Dr. Kaushal Kishore Yadav (Associate Director and Unit Head, Department of Surgical Oncology, Max Hospital, Gurugram) why cancer cases are increasing rapidly among the youth and what steps can be taken to avoid it (Cancer Prevention).
What are the major reasons for increasing cancer among youth?
Unhealthy lifestyle - In today's busy life, youth are including more fast food, processed food, and junk foods in their diet. The harmful elements present in them weaken the body's ability to fight diseases and increase the risk of cancer.
Tobacco and alcohol- Cancer is increasing rapidly among the youth due to smoking cigarettes, gutkha, and drinking alcohol. These habits are the main causes of lung, mouth, throat and liver cancer.
Obesity and physical inactivity- Due to wrong eating habits and lack of physical activity, the problem of obesity is increasing among the youth. Obesity increases the risk of breast, prostate, and colon cancer.
Pollution and chemical exposure- The effect of increasing air pollution, harmful chemicals found in water and UV rays is also increasing the cases of cancer.
Stress and lack of sleep- In modern lifestyles, stress and lack of sleep are taking a toll on the health of the youth. It weakens the body's immunity and increases the risk of cancer.
Measures to prevent cancer
Healthy diet- Take a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. It strengthens the body's ability to fight diseases and reduces the risk of cancer.
Avoid tobacco and alcohol- Stop consuming tobacco and alcohol completely. This is the most effective way to prevent cancer.
Regular exercise- Exercise at least 30 minutes a day. It controls weight and reduces the risk of cancer.
Pollution prevention- Wear a mask in polluted areas and use air purifiers indoors.
Screening and tests- Get regular health checkups and cancer screenings done. Cancer treatment becomes easier if detected on time.
Spread awareness- Educate the youth about cancer risks and prevention methods and motivate them to adopt a healthy lifestyle.
