Mothers Of Twins Face Higher Risk Of Heart Disease: A new research has revealed that women who have twins have a higher risk of heart disease than women who have one child. The findings of the study are shocking. Know about it in detail here.

Mothers Of Twins Face Higher Risk Of Heart Disease : A recent research has revealed that women who have twins have twice the risk of heart disease as compared to women who have one child. Meaning, that if a mother has two children at once, then her heart is at greater risk. This research has been published in the European Heart Journal and it has also revealed that mothers of twins may have to be hospitalized due to heart disease within a year of delivery. And if the blood pressure was also high at the time of pregnancy (called pre-eclampsia), then the risk increases even more!

The number of twins is increasing

Nowadays, the number of twins is increasing because many people take medicines to have children (fertility treatment) and many women become mothers at an older age. This is also the reason why the number of twins has increased.

Risk of heart disease within one year of delivery

Dr Ruby Lin, who conducted the research, says that when twins are in the womb, the mother's heart has to work harder. Even after delivery, it takes weeks for the heart to become normal. She also said that women whose blood pressure was normal during pregnancy are also at risk of heart disease for up to a year after delivery.

Shocking results seen in research

Research was done on the data of 36 million deliveries in the US between 2010 and 2020. It was found that out of every 1 lakh deliveries among mothers of twins, 1,105 mothers had to be hospitalized due to heart disease, whereas this figure was 734 per 1 lakh among mothers having one child.

That means that even if a mother's blood pressure was normal during pregnancy, the risk of heart disease was doubled if she had twins. And if the blood pressure was high, the risk increased eightfold!

However, a good thing also came to light women who had high blood pressure during pregnancy and gave birth to one child were more likely to die within a year after delivery. Whereas this was not the case for mothers of twins. Perhaps the risk of mothers of twins may be reduced in the long run.

Regular checkups for one year after delivery

Dr. Lin says that women who are undergoing fertility treatment, especially those who are older, obese, have diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease, should know about the risks of twin pregnancy. Doctors should also do regular checkups for such women for one year after delivery so that if there is any problem, it can be detected on time.

Simply put, mothers with twins should take extra care of their hearts. Talk to your doctor and keep getting the necessary checkups done.
