Why does the problem of shoulder pain increase in diabetes? Neurologist explained the connection between diabetes and shoulder

Diabetes And Shoulder Pain: Diabetes is not just a problem related to blood sugar, but it can also affect many parts of the body, including shoulder pain. Here you can understand the connection between high sugar and shoulder pain.
Diabetes is like a silent killer, which slowly hollows out the human body. Although most people consider diabetes to be limited to just avoiding sweets, it not only takes away the sweetness from life, but many other health problems are also associated with it, which affect the quality of life.
Shoulder pain is a problem related to diabetes that is often ignored, but it is very common. Dr. Sudhir Kumar, Consultant Neurologist at Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad, has shared information about it on the social media platform X, which can prove to be very helpful for you.
Why does shoulder pain occur?
Experts said that shoulder pain in diabetic patients is usually caused by adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder), which is a common condition. Apart from this, people who suffer from paralysis after a stroke can also have shoulder pain. Dr. Kumar said that physiotherapy and OTC anti-inflammatory drugs can help with this problem. However, if the pain persists, a doctor should be consulted.
The connection between diabetes and shoulder pain
Speaking to a media organisation, Dr Shubham Vatsya, Senior Consultant, Fortis Hospital, said that a common, but under-recognised, problem among diabetic patients is musculoskeletal (related to muscles and bones) problems, including shoulder pain.
Effect of high blood sugar on muscles
According to Dr Vatsya, high sugar leads to glycation (a chemical process) of collagen or other structural proteins present in the connective tissue, which reduces the elasticity of the tissue and causes stiffness in the shoulder. This leads to pain. Apart from this, loss of muscle mass due to diabetes, called diabetic myopathy, puts further pressure, affecting the strength and mobility of the shoulder.
Treatment and prevention of shoulder pain
Dr. Vatsya has given some suggestions for the treatment of shoulder pain. He says that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can be taken to manage the pain. If the pain is severe, corticosteroid injections can be given.
It is also important to keep these things in mind that
if the blood sugar level is continuously disturbed in diabetes, then it can increase shoulder pain. Therefore, controlling sugar, consuming proper hypoglycemic medicines, physical activity and a balanced diet are very important.
