In the current era, the responsibilities of people have increased so much that stress and depression have become common, but these depressions can become the cause of inflammation.

Link Between Depression And Inflammation: Scientists have explored the deep relationship between depression and inflammation, which can change the way we understand depression. The research of Professor Raz Yirmiya, a neuroscientist at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, is not limited to the laboratory.

Their research has shown how microglia cells and interleukin-1 play a role in stress-induced depression. This raises the question: Can the treatment of depression be improved by understanding the process of inflammation? And do different types of immune responses affect different forms of depression?

"Most depressed patients do not have a clear inflammatory disorder, but what we and other scientists have found is that stress, which is one of the major causes of depression, activates the inflammatory process in the brain," said Prof Jeremiah in an interview published in the journal Brain Medicine.

Using advanced techniques and behavioural studies, the Jeremiah team identified several potential treatment targets. Their work focuses on the microglial checkpoint system and stress tolerance, which opens up new avenues for understanding how the immune system influences mental health.

How will the treatment be?

Their research indicates that personalized treatments can be developed based on controlling inflammation. "My main effort is to use my own and other scientists' research to develop new antidepressants that target the inflammatory process," says Jeremiah. Therefore, individual treatment is needed for every patient.

This interview by Jeremiah is part of a series that exposes the people behind the new thinking of science. The authors of this series point out that in every interview, a unique blend of scientists' research and their personal views has been presented.
