Due to smog and pollution in Delhi-NCR, people are not getting enough sunlight, leading to Vitamin D deficiency. However, experts have described taking high doses of vitamin D at once as extremely dangerous.

According to a news published in TOI, Dr. Ravinder Goswami of the Department of Endocrinology of AIIMS said that vitamin D injection of 6,00,000 IU can have a bad effect on bone health. Apart from this, it can also cause serious problems like kidney stones. Dr. Goswami said that 60,000 IU intake once a month is sufficient to overcome vitamin D deficiency.

Similarly, Dr SV Madhu, University College of Medical Sciences, said active analogues such as calcitriol are used only for kidney problems and should not be taken for normal Vitamin D deficiency.

According to doctors, vitamin D plays an important role in the absorption of calcium. It helps in strengthening bones and their mineralization. Experts have advised that vitamin D supplements should be taken with milk, orange juice or water. But instead of mixing it directly into liquids, it should be kept in the mouth first.

Vitamin D deficiency is increasing in the Indian population due to increasing pollution and less sunlight in

winter. Due to the melanin present in Indian skin, it becomes difficult to make enough vitamin D from the sun's rays. For this, it is necessary to get 15-30 minutes of sunlight between 10 am and 2 pm during clear skies.

Foods

such as eggs and fish contain vitamin D, but the amount is so small that it is not practical to meet the daily requirement from these alone. Experts suggested that vitamin D deficiency can be controlled only by a balanced diet and regular sunlight.
