When does Amarnath Yatra last?

The Amarnath Yatra for this year is scheduled to begin on June 29 and end on August 19. Due to election reasons, the duration of the pilgrimage has been reduced to 45 days instead of the usual two months. Registration for the yatra will start from April 15.

This pilgrimage is believed to provide spiritual benefits, a true visit to the holy cave of Baba Barfani brings salvation to the devotees. It is said that a pilgrimage to this holy place is equal to the merit gained from visiting 23 other holy places. According to the scriptures, the virtue gained by worshiping Shiva Lingam here is more than the virtue gained by visiting Kashi, Prayag, and Naimisharanya.

Legend has it that Lord Shiva told the secret of immortality to Goddess Parvati in this cave, but she fell asleep midway. Every year a Shivalinga of ice is naturally formed in the holy Amarnath cave, where the worship takes place. It is believed that by worshiping Baba Amarnath, all the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled and their sufferings go away.

The unique feature of the Shivalinga in the Amarnath cave is its self-formed nature, it is believed to change shape with the phases of the moon. Made of solid ice, the Shivalinga is visible in the form of a stalagmite in the cave. Every year devotees from all over the world come to Amarnath Yatra to have a darshan of this miraculous Lingam amidst tight security arrangements.
