For pet owners , planning a trip , especially a long trip , can pose significant challenges. While short trips within the city may be manageable , longer trips require careful consideration , especially when it comes to your pet's well-being. Leaving them alone at home or with someone else can cause anxiety and behavioral problems. Thankfully , Indian Railways provides guidelines for traveling with pets , ensuring a smooth journey for both you and your furry companion.

Choose the right class : Pets including dogs and cats are not allowed in Second AC , Third AC , AC Chair Car or Sleeper class. Instead , you will have to book a 2- berth or 4- berth coupe in First AC to accommodate your pet.

Inform the Chief Reservation Officer: Once your ticket is confirmed , you will have to write an application to the Chief Reservation Officer of the concerned station , informing them about your pet. This can be done both online or offline.

Be sure to have vaccinations: Before traveling , make sure your pet is vaccinated. Unvaccinated pets are not allowed on trains.

One pet per passenger (PNR): Only one pet is allowed per passenger (PNR). You can book pet tickets online through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) portal.

Arrive early: Arrive at the station at least two hours before departure. This allows you to submit all the necessary documents including photocopies of the animal's vaccine certificate , confirmed ticket and fitness certificate to the railway authorities .

Take care of your pet: You are responsible for your pet's food and drink while traveling. Railways charges Rs 60 per kg for carrying a pet ,30 per kg for transportation within a compartment.
