A woman living healthy life with pig kidney: Successful transplant of pig kidney into human body: Towana Looney became the first woman in the world to be given a genetically modified kidney of a pig through xenotransplantation when her kidney failed.

Health Desk: You must have heard about using another human's organ when the organ is damaged. Science has progressed so much that in the absence of human organs, animal organs are being used for transplantation. In Alabama, America, the kidney of a 53-year-old woman had failed. The woman, who was waiting for an organ transplant for about 8 years, could not find a donor. Then a genetically modified pig's kidney was transplanted into the woman. Towana Looney is the first woman in the world who is living a healthy life with a pig's organ.

The last option was pig kidney

Towana Looney suffered from kidney failure in 1999. The woman donated her first kidney to her ailing mother. The other kidney failed due to complications during pregnancy and high blood pressure. After this, Looney had no solution other than a kidney transplant. Till 2016, Looney was on dialysis and her name was placed on the list for a kidney transplant. When there was no success for 8 years, Looney joined the program with the help of the US Food and Drug Administration. During the program, it was learned that experiments were going on on pig kidney transplants.

Genetic changes were made 10 times.

The process of transplantation from animals to humans is called xenotransplantation. Doctors informed that genetic changes were made about 10 times before transplanting a pig's kidney to Looni. Even after about 30 days of surgery, Looni's health is good. Doctors feel that this is a kind of blessing that has given Looni a chance to live life again.

Animal parts are a ray of hope for humans

According to Langone news release, 104,000 people are on the list of organ transplants in the US. Out of them, more than 90,400 people are waiting for a kidney. On the other hand, if we talk about the number of kidney patients, then more than 8 lakh people are going through the last stage of kidney disease. In the year 2023, only 27 thousand people could get kidney transplants. In such a situation, living life with a pig's kidney has really brought a ray of hope.
