In today's busy life, people have less time for food and more convenient options. In such a situation, the demand for packaged foods and snacks has increased rapidly. According to a recent report in India, 38% of people are consuming unhealthy foods like packaged, salty and oily snacks to satisfy their hunger. These worrying figures have come to light in the 'Global Food Policy Report 2024: Healthy Diet and Nutrition' released by the US International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).

According to the report, 16.6% of the population in India suffers from malnutrition, the main reason for which is poor eating habits. 4 out of 10 Indians are consuming unhealthy packaged food, while only 2 people are consuming 5 recommended food groups. These include starch rich foods, vegetables, fruits, pulses and micronutrient rich foods like nuts.

Excess sugar, fat and sodium

Packaged foods and snacks often contain high amounts of sugar, fat and sodium. These ingredients are tasty, but can be harmful to the body. Consuming them in large quantities can increase the risk of serious diseases such as obesity, heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

What is the opinion of the experts?

Experts say that packaged food contains less nutrients, whereas fresh fruits, vegetables and natural food provide the body with essential vitamins, minerals and fiber, which are necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Due to packaged snacks, people can also suffer from deficiency of micronutrients such as iron, zinc and vitamins.

It is clear from this report that people are compromising with their health in the pursuit of saving time and taste. It is very important to include fresh and nutritious things in your diet at the right time, so that we can avoid these serious diseases and live a healthy life.
