Science has taken a big step forward in the deadly disease like cancer. Researchers at Barcelona's Center for Genomic Regulation have made a new discovery, which has shown that different types of cancer have unique 'molecular fingerprints'. This discovery will make it possible to detect cancer even faster and more accurately than before.

Human fingerprints can now be used to identify cancer. According to research, types of cancer can be identified by analyzing fingerprint patterns i.e. 'dermatoglyphics'. Six types of cancer were studied in this research such as gynaecological cancer, oral cancer, prostate cancer, gastric cancer, leukemia and pituitary tumor.

New technique: Nanopore Direct RNA Sequencing

A new technique called 'Nanopore Direct RNA Sequencing' was used in this research. This technique helps in directly analyzing the RNA molecules present in fingerprints. The research team studied the health and sick tissue of 20 patients with stage I and stage II lung cancer and found that chemical modification of RNA is reduced in cancer cells.

The breakthrough could not only help detect cancer early, but also make it easier to treat through non-invasive diagnostic tests. Professor Eva Nova, who led the research, said that micro differences found in human fingerprints can tell a lot about a person's health and diseases.

What does the research say?

The researchers studied patterns of RNA modification in different tissues such as the brain, heart, liver, and testis of mice and humans and found that each tissue has its own unique pattern of RNA modification.
