To make fluffy and flavorful rice, you can follow this basic recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice (long-grain, basmati, or your preferred variety)
  • 1 3/4 cups water (adjust as per the rice variety and package instructions)
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon cooking oil or butter for added flavor

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the rice: Rinse the rice under running water until the water runs clear. This helps remove any excess starch and ensures fluffier rice.

  2. Soak the rice (optional): Soaking the rice for about 15-30 minutes before cooking can help improve the texture and shorten the cooking time. If you choose to soak the rice, drain it thoroughly before cooking.

  3. Cooking on the stovetop:

    • In a saucepan or pot with a tight-fitting lid, add the rinsed and drained rice.
    • Add water to the pot, maintaining a ratio of 1 3/4 cups water for 1 cup of rice (adjust as needed based on the rice variety).
    • Add salt and oil or butter if desired, for flavor.
    • Give it a gentle stir to combine the ingredients.
    • Place the lid on the pot and bring it to a boil over medium-high heat.
    • Once it reaches a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the water is fully absorbed.
  4. Steaming method:

    • Rinse the rice as mentioned earlier and drain it well.
    • In a pot or steamer, add water and bring it to a boil.
    • Place the rinsed rice in a heatproof steamer basket or a sieve and place it over the boiling water.
    • Cover the pot or steamer with a tight-fitting lid and steam the rice for about 15-20 minutes until it is tender and cooked through.
  5. Fluffing the rice: Once the rice is cooked, remove it from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 5-10 minutes. This allows the steam to redistribute within the rice and makes it easier to fluff with a fork or rice paddle. Gently fluff the rice to separate the grains.

Serve the fluffy rice as a side dish, with curries, stir-fries, or any other main course of your choice. Remember to adjust the water-to-rice ratio and cooking time according to the specific instructions on the rice package, as different varieties may require slight variations.
