People of north-western states have low HDL cholesterol, Kerala has the highest risk of heart disease
According to a new study published in the Indian Heart Journal, people living in the northwestern states of India are at the highest risk of hypercholesterolemia. Hypercholesterolemia is a condition in which the amount of 'bad' cholesterol (LDL) in the blood increases and the amount of 'good' cholesterol (HDL) decreases.
In this study conducted by the Indian Cardiology Society of India, the lipid profile of people in different geographical areas of the country was analyzed. According to the study, 29.2 percent of people in the western states, 28.2 percent in the north, 24.5 percent in the south, and 18.8 percent in the eastern states were found to have hypercholesterolemia.
Kerala has the highest number of people suffering from high cholesterol.
The study also found that Kerala is at the top in terms of total cholesterol. Here 50.3 percent of the people have cholesterol levels above normal. It is followed by Goa (45.6%) and Himachal Pradesh (39.6%).
Northern states have the highest bad cholesterol.
According to the study, North India has the highest level of bad cholesterol (LDL). Here, 29.1 percent of people were found to have LDL levels above normal. This is followed by Western India (30.2%), Southern India (23.5%) and Eastern India (19.2%).
Southern states have the lowest cholesterol.
Southern India is lagging behind in terms of good cholesterol (HDL). Here, 53.9 percent of people were found to have lower-than-normal HDL levels. This is followed by Eastern India (46.5%), Northern India (44.6%) and Western India (29.3%).
Jharkhand has the lowest incidence of high cholesterol
. According to the study, Jharkhand has the lowest incidence of high cholesterol. Here only 4.6 percent of the people were found to have high cholesterol. After this comes Assam (7.9%) and Bihar (9.7%).
Dangers of Hypercholesterolemia
Hypercholesterol is a major cause of heart disease, stroke, and other serious diseases. It causes plaque to accumulate in the arteries and narrows them, which hinders blood flow.
