Paracetamol Disadvantages: There are many side effects of fever medicine paracetamol. Especially elderly people should consume it very carefully.
Paracetamol, often used to relieve mild fever or pain, is not safe for older people. Its use can cause serious problems related to digestion, heart and kidney. This claim has been made in a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Nottingham in the UK.
According to the study, the use of this drug in people aged 65 years or more can increase the risk of diseases related to intestine, heart, and kidney. Also, its long-term use can cause ulcers and bleeding problems in the digestive system.
Study conducted on more than 1 lakh people
In their study, the researchers analyzed the health records of 1,80,483 older people who were given paracetamol repeatedly. Subsequently, these reports were compared with 4,02,478 other older persons who had never been given paracetamol. The results of this analysis revealed some serious health problems associated with the intake of paracetamol.
Health issues increase by 24-36 percent
Experts found that the consumption of paracetamol can increase the risk of serious digestive problems, in which the chances of peptic ulcer increase from 24 to 36 percent. In addition, the risk of kidney disease can increase by 19 percent and the risk of heart attack by 9 percent. While the risk of high BP can also increase by 7 percent.
Is paracetamol not safe?
Paracetamol is generally considered to be effective and safe for treating mild fever, pain or bone disorders. But the results of the study have raised questions about the long-term use of paracetamol.
Expert opinion
Lead investigator Wei Zhang, from the University of Nottingham's School of Medicine, said paracetamol is reportedly considered safe and has been recommended as the primary drug in a number of treatment guidelines. This medicine is considered a common option, especially in older people, who are at a higher risk of complications arising from medications. But our studies have shown that long-term use can cause serious side effects in these people.
