Researchers from Australia's Rural Health Research Institute, Nepal and Ethiopia found in their study that obesity is spreading like an epidemic among women aged 15-49 years. Urbanization and lifestyle changes are being cited as the main reasons for this. According to the study, women from 10 Asian countries including India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal are rapidly falling prey to obesity. The trend of obesity has been increasing continuously in these countries in the last two decades.

The study has found that the trend of obesity has increased in all countries except Maldives. In Pakistan, 17.3% women were obese in 2012, which has increased to 21.8% in 2022. The obesity rate is also increasing rapidly in India. While only 2.5 percent women were obese in 2005, now this number has increased to more than 5%.
