Obesity may increase dementia risk, dangerous sign for men: Study
A new study has revealed that risk factors such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease can bring men into the grip of dementia 10 years earlier.
Dementia is a brain disease, in which memory is weak, emotional balance and the ability to think and understand is reduced or eliminated. By the way, dementia is generally considered to be a disease of the elderly, although this risk can knock even before the age of 50. A new study has revealed that risk factors such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease can bring men into the grip of dementia 10 years earlier.
According to the study, published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry, while women start dementia at an average age of 65 to 75 years, in men it can start between 55 and 75 years. The researchers found that areas of the brain that are associated with auditory processing, visual perception, emotional processing and memory have the greatest impact.
The study also showed that cardiovascular disease can have harmful effects on the brains of men and women even without the effect of the risk gene (APOE4).
Brain and abdominal scans of
34,425 participants were analyzed. Men and women with more belly fat and visceral adipose tissue were found to have lower brain gray matter volume. Due to obesity and heart disease, brain volume can decrease gradually over several decades.
The study emphasized on reducing the risk factors of heart disease before the age of 55 years. According to researchers, controlling obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes can reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's.
