This dal is considered Non-vegetarian

Many types of pulses like arhar, urad, and moong are found in India. One of them is red lentils, which are considered non-vegetarian. The saints and sages who follow the rules of the Vaishnav sect avoid consuming red lentils.

This is a mythological belief.

There is a mythological belief that when Lord Vishnu killed a demon named Swarbhanu, he did not die. His body was divided into two parts, the head being called Rahu and the torso being called Ketu. When the head was cut, a few drops of blood fell down, which gave rise to red lentils. This is the reason why the sages and saints belonging to the Vaishnav sect do not eat this lentil.

These are also beliefs

Red lentils contain high protein, due to which it increases sexual power, anger and lethargy. It is placed in the category of Tamasic food. Due to this Brahmins and sages do not like to consume red lentils. It is also believed that red lentils promote negativity just like non-vegetarian food, onion and garlic.
