Indian scientists have achieved a major milestone by discovering a cure for a dangerous form of TB (Tuberculosis). Scientists at Mohali's Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST) have developed a new way to deliver TB medicines directly to the brain. Through this new technology, TB medicines can be sent from the nose to the brain, which will play an important role in the treatment of TB spreading in the central nervous system (CNS).

Central nervous system TB (CNS TB) is a severe form that affects the brain and spinal cord. It often manifests as tuberculous meningitis, in which the protective membranes surrounding the brain become inflamed. This causes serious problems such as headache, fever, stiff neck and neurological symptoms. Usually, TB medicines are unable to reach the brain from the blood because a protective wall (called the blood-brain barrier (BBB)) that separates the brain from the bloodstream hinders it. Scientists have developed a new technology to solve this problem.

How does the new technology work?

According to a TOI report, a team of scientists (led by Rahul Kumar Verma) has developed micro nanoparticles called chitosan nano-aggregates. These nanoparticles are made from chitosan, which is a biodegradable and biocompatible material. These nano-aggregates are specifically designed to be delivered to the brain through the nose. TB drugs such as isoniazid (INH) and rifampicin (RIF) can be loaded into these nano-aggregates. According to the official statement, by administering the drug through the nose, these nano-aggregates can deliver the drug directly to the brain, greatly improving the bioavailability of the drug at the site of infection.

This method can also be effective for other diseases.

This new technique can not only prove useful in the treatment of TB, but can also prove helpful in the treatment of other brain infections, neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's), brain tumors and epilepsy. This important research has been published in the journal 'Nanoscale' of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
