In today's time, plastic has become a part of our lives, but it is having dangerous consequences. According to a recent study, a person is swallowing a minimum of 5.2 grams and a maximum of 260 grams of microplastics throughout the year. That is, you're unknowingly swallowing as much plastic as a credit card every week. The study was conducted by Professor Dhava Palanisamy of Newcastle University, Australia, presented at an event held at AIIMS.
Microplastics are plastic particles of very small size, which enter the body through our food and breathing. These dangerous particles are found in tap water, bottled water, honey, salt and even beer. This problem is even more serious in seafood. Plastic waste present in the oceans reaches humans through marine organisms. In addition, microplastics present in the air also enter the body with breath.
According to AIIMS professor Dr Reema Dada, microplastics weaken our immune system. This is increasing the risk of serious diseases like diabetes, thyroid, neurological disorders and cancer. It can even cause infertility.
According to Professor Dhawa's study, the highest number of microplastics have been found in tap water and bottled water. Especially bottled water has a high amount of plastic. Moreover, things like salt, honey and sugar are also contaminated with plastic.
