Clinical trial results
The study involved 25 healthy adults, none of whom had previously been infected with malaria. The participants received the vaccine with a genetically modified P. falciparum parasite (GA2), which is designed to develop prolongingly in the liver. During this trial, 10 participants were placed in the Ga2 group, 10 in the Ga1 group and 5 in the placebo group. All three groups were vaccinated three times at a 28-day interval.
Subsequently, participants in the GA2 and GA1 groups were exposed to mosquitoes infected with P. falciparum parasite, while participants in the placebo group were exposed to uninfected mosquitoes. Finally, all participants were exposed to controlled malaria infection to see how much protection the vaccine provides.
Vaccine effectiveness
The results of this study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that 89% of participants in the GA2 group had protection against malaria. Only 13% of participants in the GA1 group received protection, and in the placebo group, no one received protection. This makes it clear that the GA2 vaccine provides a high level of protection against malaria.
Safe and effective vaccination
The special thing about this vaccine is that no participant in the GA2 group contracted malaria after vaccination, proving that this vaccine is not only effective but also safe. The researchers also found that participants in the GA2 group had a strong pro-inflammatory response, which further strengthened the safety of this vaccination. In addition, both the GA2 and GA1 groups produced similar levels of antibodies, but GA2 provided additional protection, largely due to the response of the cellular immune system.
