It is believed that Lord Shiva had given Nandi a boon that if any person whispers his wish in his ear, Lord Shiva will definitely fulfill his wish. This has also been described in the scriptures.

According to mythological texts, Lord Shiva used to remain absorbed in meditation most of the time. To ensure that there is no disturbance in Lord Shiva's meditation, his Gan Nandi Ji always used to serve him as his guard. During Lord Shiva's penance, whoever came to meet him, would whisper his wish or desire in Nandi's ears and then leave. The words spoken by the devotees in Nandi's ears would reach Lord Shiva directly and Lord Shiva would fulfill them.
