Keto diet and CAR T cell therapy offer new hope in cancer treatment
In the ketogenic diet, a simple dietary supplement, CAR T, reprograms patients' immune cells to kill cancer cells.
In a recent study, it has been found that a ketogenic diet, which is high in fat and protein, can enhance the effect of a common dietary supplement 'CAR T' cell therapy. CAR T (Chimeric Antigen Reverse T-Cell) therapy is an advanced treatment, in which the patient's immune cells are reprogrammed to damage cancer cells.
Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine and Abramson Cancer Center have investigated the possibility of this new combination. Preliminary results indicate that the keto diet and CART may improve the ability to fight cancer.
Study Result
The aim of the study was to understand the effect of ketogenic diets on CART T cell therapy. The researchers compared the effects of different diets using mouse models, including ketogenic diets. In tests conducted on mice, it was found that the mice who were given a ketogenic diet improved tumor control and survival rate compared to all other diets.
CAR T Cell Therapy and Ketogenic Diet Combination
"CART T has been used to treat many patients with blood cancer, but it doesn't work for every patient," said Shan Liu, co-lead author of the study and a postdoctoral fellow.
Cheap cancer treatment
"It could be a treatment that is relatively inexpensive and has the potential for low toxicity," said Dr Mayan Levy, assistant professor of microbiology. More clinical trials still need to be done on this, but this research gives rise to new possibilities for the treatment of cancer.
