Diabetes is becoming a major health problem in India and it can be controlled only with the right diet. According to the World Health Organization, about 77 million people above the age of 18 in India suffer from diabetes. Some food items can increase blood sugar levels rapidly, so they are very dangerous for diabetic patients. Here are 5 food items that diabetic patients should avoid to keep their glucose levels under control.

Sweets

Sweets like gulab jamun, jalebi and laddoos are loaded with sugar and refined carbs. These can spike blood sugar levels quickly and cause insulin resistance over time. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, eating too much sweets is a major cause of diabetes.

The study emphasizes that diabetic patients should reduce their intake of sugar-rich sweets to keep their blood sugar levels stable.

High-sugar drinks and fruit juices

Drinks like lassi, sweetened fruit juices and sodas are high in sugar and can rapidly increase blood glucose levels. They also provide very little nutrition, so they are not good for diabetic patients. A report in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research shows that regular consumption of sweetened beverages significantly increases the risk of diabetes in the Indian population. According to health experts, diabetic patients should drink water, unsweetened herbal tea or fresh fruit infusions.

White rice and refined grains

White rice has a very high glycemic index. This means it is digested quickly, causing blood sugar levels to rise rapidly. Other refined grains such as maida pose a similar risk. A study published in BMJ found that a diet rich in white rice increased the risk of type 2 diabetes. Eating brown rice or whole grains may help control blood sugar levels more effectively.

Fried snacks

Fried snacks like samosas, pakoras, French fries and bhaturas are rich in unhealthy fats and refined carbohydrates. These foods can lead to weight gain and insulin resistance, making them extremely harmful for diabetes patients. Research in the International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries has shown that fried foods hurt insulin sensitivity and weight management in people with diabetes. Experts recommend choosing cooking methods like baking or grilling.

Full-fat dairy products

Full-fat dairy products like cream, full-fat cheese, and full-cream milk are rich in saturated fats. These can increase insulin resistance and raise cholesterol levels, which can make it difficult to manage diabetes. The Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders reports that consuming too many saturated fats increases the risk of insulin resistance and poor glycemic control in patients with diabetes. Consume low-fat or fat-free dairy products to better manage blood sugar levels.
