Travel in 3rd AC coach on sleeper coach reservation

What are the rules associated with it? Also, if we want, how can we take advantage of this facility. With the help of which measures or Jugaad at the time of ticket booking (Train Ticket Booking Online), we can enjoy a journey with more luxury in the third AC coach at the price of sleeper coach reservation.

Indian Railways started Auto Upgradation Scheme

Indian Railways had very thoughtfully launched this auto upgradation scheme for its own benefit so that no seat remains vacant in the train. In fact, many times berths used to remain vacant in upper class coaches like AC-one, two or three of many trains. Due to this, the railways had to suffer huge losses. To avoid this loss and to make the passengers aware of the facilities of upper class coaches, the railways had started this auto upgradation (IRCTC Auto Upgradation Rules).

Upgrading a passenger from one class lower to a berth in the upper class

Under this auto upgradation scheme of railways, if a berth remains vacant in the upper class, then a passenger from one class below him is upgraded and given a berth in that class. For example, if four seats are vacant in the AC first bogie of a train and two seats are vacant in AC second, then the tickets of some passengers of second AC will be upgraded and they will be put in first AC. Also, passengers of third AC will be upgraded and given seats in second AC.

Both railways and passengers benefit from the auto upgradation scheme

With this initiative of the railways, some of the seats that get vacant in the third AC will be given to the passengers on the waiting list. If more seats are vacant, then the sleeper class passenger will be given a berth in the third AC. In this way, no berth of any reserved coach of the train will remain vacant. The loss of the railways will be reduced and the passengers will also benefit. However, to avail this facility, the passenger has to be careful while booking the ticket.

Use this special trick while booking tickets

While booking tickets from IRCTC's website or app, you are asked to choose the option for auto upgradation. In this, you have to choose the option of yes or no. Passengers who tick the yes option are given priority under the ticket auto upgradation scheme. Those who choose no are not disturbed. However, if the passenger does not select any option from yes or no at the time of booking, then the system automatically assumes it to be yes.

What are the rules for PNR, cancellation or refund?

Finally, it is important to know that under the auto upgrade scheme, there is no change in the PNR despite the change in the class of the coach. This means that the same PNR has to be used for any information related to the travel ticket. Apart from this, if the ticket is cancelled after being upgraded, then the old fare is refunded as per the rules, and not the upgraded class.
