But let us tell you that a limited amount of cholesterol is necessary for our body. Actually, cholesterol is a type of lipid, i.e. fat, which helps in making healthy cells.

But if its quantity starts increasing, then it can become the cause of heart disease. Some symptoms are seen in our body when cholesterol increases (High Cholesterol). It is very important to know about them, so that necessary steps can be taken to control its level. Let us know from the experts about the symptoms of increased cholesterol (High Cholesterol Symptoms) and ways to control it.

We spoke to Dr. Bimal Chhajar (former consultant of AIIMS and director of SAAOL Heart Center, New Delhi) about this . He told that there are often no obvious symptoms of high cholesterol. That is why it is usually detected only when some serious disease makes us its victim. But it has some symptoms, which indicate the increase in its level in different parts of the body.

Symptoms of high cholesterol

  • Some symptoms of increased cholesterol are visible on a person's skin. High cholesterol causes yellow spots or lumps to form on the skin, which are often seen around the eyes or on the elbows and knees.
  • Similarly, some symptoms are also seen in the hands and feet. Due to accumulation of cholesterol, the arteries start narrowing and blood flow decreases. Due to this, there may be a problem of tingling in the hands or feet or stiffness in the legs during any physical activity.
  • High cholesterol can also cause problems with the digestive system. This can cause stones in the gall bladder. This causes pain in the upper right part of the stomach.
  • Heart related problems are the most common cause of increased cholesterol. Due to the accumulation of plaque in the arteries, blood flow starts getting obstructed. This can cause chest pain. If the arteries get blocked, a heart attack can also occur, the common symptoms of which are chest pain and shortness of breath.
  • If an artery bursts or gets blocked due to plague, it affects the heart as well as the brain and can cause a stroke. When a stroke occurs, the person suddenly starts feeling weakness or a part of the body becomes numb, symptoms like confusion, difficulty in speaking and problems in coordination start appearing.

How to control cholesterol?

Dr. Chhajar explains that improving lifestyle is most important to control cholesterol.

  • Control the amount of saturated fats in your diet. Also, avoid trans fats, which are commonly found in processed and fried foods.
  • Increase the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. This is a healthy fat, which helps in reducing cholesterol.
  • Increase the amount of soluble fiber in your diet . This helps in controlling cholesterol level.
  • Apart from this, exercise regularly and try to maintain a healthy weight. Losing even a small amount of weight can significantly improve cholesterol levels.
