Skin is the largest organ of our body and it plays an important role in protecting children from external harms. In winter, cold air, low humidity and indoor heating can cause problems like dry, cracking and itching of the skin. Especially the skin of babies under one year of age, which is 40-60 times thinner than adults, needs extra care in winter. Here are some tips to keep your baby's skin healthy and moisturized during winters.

Dr. Kushal Aggarwal, HOD, Department of Neonatology and Paediatrics at KVR Hospital (Kashipur), explains that children do not need to be bathed daily in winter, especially in hilly or cold areas. Bathing two to three times a week is enough, unless the local tradition says otherwise. Do not keep bath time to more than 15 minutes and do not use soapy lather or other bath additives, as they can disturb the pH of the skin and cause irritation. Use a pH balance sintered bar to bathe your precious baby. After bathing, gently wipe the baby from head to toe with a dry and warm towel to retain moisture on the skin.

Importance of Oil Massage Oil massage is extremely essential for maintaining the moisture of the skin in winters. Use safflower, sunflower or almond oil as these help improve the skin's defences. Do not use mustard or olive oil as they can weaken the natural defenses of the skin. Warm the oil lightly and gently massage it on the baby's skin.

Use a petroleum-based, water-soluble and non-fragrance, colour and preservative.

These will help lock the moisture of the skin and prevent dryness. Also, wear layers of soft, breathable cotton fabric to protect the baby from cold winds.

Indoor hydration

heating devices can dry out indoor air, further reducing skin moisture. Use a humidifier to maintain indoor humidity and make sure the child takes in an adequate amount of fluids. By following these tips, you can protect your baby's delicate skin from the harsh effects of winter and keep it healthy, supple and irritation-free.
