Sleep regularity and sleeping well are not just about resting the body, but it is also very important for the health of the heart and mind. A research recently published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health has revealed that if you do not have a habit of sleeping and waking up at the same time every day, then the risk of heart attack and stroke can increase by 26%.

The study was conducted on more than 72,000 participants aged between 40 and 79 years. The study found that sleep regularity is a bigger predictor of cardiovascular disease risk factors, even more effective than sleep duration.

What does the research say?

The researchers divided participants into three groups based on the 'Sleep Regulation Index' (SRI):

Poor sleep (SRI >87.3): The lowest risk of heart disease.

Those with moderate irregular sleep (SRI 71.6-87.3): Risk increased by 8%.

Those with more irregular sleep (SRI <71.6): The risk increased to 26%

The research also showed that getting enough sleep alone is not enough. If you do not keep your sleep time regular, then the risk of heart diseases does not decrease.

Irregular sleep causes the body's 24-hour biological clock (circadian rhythm) to become unbalanced. This watch not only controls metabolism but also hormonal activity. Its disturbance can affect heart attack, stroke, diabetes and even mental health.

How to improve?

Experts say that some easy measures can be adopted to maintain sleep routine, such as

sleeping and waking up at the same time.

* Reduce screen time (mobile, laptop) before sleeping.

* Eat light meals at night and avoid caffeine.

* Keep the sleeping environment quiet and dark.

* Include reading or meditating before bedtime.
