Jaundice is a disease that can affect anyone, children are most affected by it. In this condition the skin, eyes and urine become yellow. Other symptoms may include itching, loss of appetite, and nausea. Jaundice is mainly associated with liver-related problems. Let's find out more about this condition.

What is Jaundice?

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), jaundice occurs when the body can't properly process a compound called bilirubin, causing the skin, sclera (whites of the eyes) and the whites of the eyes to turn yellow. Bilirubin is produced when red blood cells break down and the liver filters this waste product. When there is excess bilirubin in the body, the liver cannot clear it efficiently, causing jaundice.

Causes of Jaundice

Health experts say that jaundice can be caused by disorders or excessive production of bilirubin as well as the inability of the liver to filter it properly. Factors such as side effects of certain medications, gallstones, excessive alcohol consumption, and liver diseases such as cirrhosis or hepatitis can contribute to jaundice. Therefore, it is important to take precautions to avoid becoming a victim of this condition.

Symptoms beyond the skin

In addition to yellowing of the skin, symptoms of jaundice include fatigue, stomach pain, weight loss, and nausea.
