In today's era, many women are facing various menstrual-related problems, including irregular periods, heavy bleeding, and prolonged menstrual cycles. Typically, menstruation lasts for three to five days in most women, while for some, it may extend up to seven days. However, if periods continue for more than seven days, it should not be taken lightly. Although this may happen occasionally over the span of a few months, medical consultation is required if this problem is experienced every month. Especially if it is accompanied by heavy bleeding, it may be a sign of a serious medical condition.

According to doctors, while periods can last up to seven days for some women, experiencing them for longer than that could be a sign of health problems. If your period used to last five days, but now lasts seven days or longer, it is important to pay attention. This may be a sign that the hormonal balance in your body is not working properly, potentially leading to various health problems.

Bleeding disorder

Dr. Chanchal Sharma, a women's health expert in Delhi, says that if periods continue for more than seven days, it could be a sign of a bleeding disorder. Even if there is heavy bleeding, it is advisable to get it checked. If a bleeding disorder is detected, it can be treated with medication. However, if there is no bleeding disorder, prolonged periods may be a sign of certain medical conditions.

Fibroid

Prolonged menstruation, lasting more than seven days, may be related to the presence of fibroids (growths) in the uterus. Fibroids can later become a serious health problem and may even increase the risk of cancer.

Thyroid disorder

In some cases, thyroid disorders may cause menstruation to last longer. If this problem persists, it is advised to get a thyroid test done.

Cervical cancer

Fibroids can also increase the risk of cervical cancer. Prolonged menstruation as well as lower abdominal pain can be signs of this condition. It is more commonly seen in women above 45 years of age.

  • If your periods last more than seven days, consult a doctor.
  • Pay attention to your diet and lifestyle during menstruation.
