Giloy Benefits: During the Covid period, when the world was battling the infection, there was a lot of discussion about the Tridosha Shamak medicine of our ancient medical system Ayurveda. It is considered 'like nectar'. Its name is Giloy. A multi-purpose medicine which is helpful in the treatment of many diseases. It helps in balancing the three doshas of the body such as Vata, Pitta and Kapha, hence it is also known as Tridosha Shamak medicine.

It is considered an invaluable medicine in Ayurveda, Charak Samhita and home medicine. Its identity is not limited only to its properties, but its consumption also helps in maintaining overall health. The medicinal properties of this vine are also mentioned in Sushruta Samhita. Giloy leaves are astringent and bitter in taste, but its properties are extremely beneficial.

Immunity becomes stronger-

According to Ayurveda, Giloy helps in digestion and increases appetite. Its consumption strengthens the immune system and is also beneficial for the eyes. Regular consumption of Giloy provides relief from problems like thirst, burning sensation, diabetes, leprosy, jaundice, piles, TB and urinary tract disease. It is also an important medicine for removing weakness in women.

Its medicinal properties have been described in detail in Sushruta Samhita. It is a creeper which absorbs some of the properties of the tree on which it climbs. Therefore, Giloy growing on a Neem tree is considered the best.

The stem of Giloy looks like a rope and its leaves are shaped like betel leaves. Its flowers are yellow and green in colour and grow in clusters, while its fruits are like pea seeds. In modern Ayurveda, it is considered as an anti-bacterial, anti-viral and germicidal medicine.

Increase eyesight-

The use of Giloy improves eyesight. Consuming its juice mixed with Triphala removes weakness of the eyes. Apart from this, for cleaning the ears, rubbing the stem of Giloy in water and putting it in the ear after warming it clears the dirt. Using it with dry ginger is beneficial in the problem of hiccups.

According to Ayurvedic texts, TB patients get benefit by consuming its decoction with herbs like Ashwagandha, Shatavar, Dashmool, Adusa, Atis etc. Apart from this, to get relief from acidity, drinking sugar candy mixed with Giloy juice relieves vomiting and stomach irritation. To overcome the problem of constipation, consuming jaggery with Giloy juice is very beneficial.

Giloy is also very important in the problem of piles. Consuming decoction made by boiling harad, coriander and giloy in water provides relief from piles. Not only this, giloy is considered very beneficial for curing liver problems. Drinking decoction made by mixing fresh giloy, parsley, small peepal and neem cures liver problems. Along with this, it is also helpful in controlling diabetes. Giloy juice proves to be very beneficial for diabetic patients. Taking it mixed with honey keeps the sugar level under control.

Beneficial for the heart-

Giloy is also a panacea for problems like elephantiasis or filariasis. Mixing its juice with mustard oil and drinking it on an empty stomach provides relief from this disease. Giloy is also considered very beneficial for keeping the heart healthy. Taking it in lukewarm water with black pepper prevents heart diseases. Giloy is also considered an effective medicine for serious diseases like cancer. According to Patanjali's research, giving a mixture of Giloy and wheatgrass juice to blood cancer patients has given immense benefits.

Special care should be taken regarding the quantity of Giloy to be consumed. Generally, the quantity of decoction to be consumed is 20-30 mg and the quantity of juice is 20 ml. However, for more benefits, it should be taken on the advice of an Ayurvedic doctor.

However, it can also have some disadvantages. It lowers blood sugar, so people with low sugar levels should not consume it. It should also be avoided during pregnancy. It should be used after taking medical advice.

Giloy is found almost everywhere in India. It is available in abundance from Kumaon to Assam, from Bihar to Karnataka. It grows up to a height of 1,000 meters above sea level.
