GERD Symptoms: If you lie down after eating like everyone else and you continue to have frequent burping or bloating problems due to this, then this can increase the risk of GERD.

GERD Symptoms: It is common for many people to burp or feel bloated occasionally after eating, but if it happens constantly, it can be a sign of a serious illness such as gastroesophageal reflux disease. GERD occurs when the muscle located in the lower part of the oesophagus, called the lower oesophagal sphincter, becomes weak or does not close properly. This causes stomach acid to go back into the oesophagus and irritate it, causing frequent burping. If left untreated, GERD can lead to complications such as esophagitis, stricture or Barrett's oesophagus, which increases the risk of oesophagal cancer.

Dr. Sarthak Malik, Consultant, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Manipal Hospitals Dwarka, New Delhi, explains the common symptoms and prevention methods of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)…

Symptoms of GERD

1. Heartburn after eating.

2. Acid reflux can cause a sour taste in the back of the mouth.

3. Feeling pain or discomfort in the chest.

4. Nausea Feeling of being sick after eating.

Prevention of GERD

1. Eat small meals- Avoid overeating and eat small but frequent meals to reduce pressure on the lower oesophageal sphincter (LES).

2. Avoid eating unhealthy foods – Do not include spicy foods, citrus fruits, chocolate, caffeine and fatty or fried foods in your diet.

3. Keep your weight under control- Excess weight can increase pressure on the abdomen and aggravate GERD symptoms.

4. Avoid lying down after eating – To digest the food properly, do not lie down for at least 2-3 hours.

5. Limit smoking and alcohol consumption – Both smoking and alcohol can weaken the LES, increasing the likelihood of acid reflux.
