- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)

Rinse the moong dal under running water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
In a pressure cooker, heat the ghee over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Let them splutter.
Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.
Add the chopped tomatoes, green chilies, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
Add the rinsed moong dal to the pressure cooker. Mix everything together.
Add 3 cups of water to the pressure cooker and stir well.
Close the pressure cooker lid and cook on medium heat for 3 to 4 whistles, or until the dal is cooked and soft.
